Normally I do not post numbered Family Dog and Bill Graham concert posters since they are more than well documented in numerous books and articles; however this poster is very special and deserves Poster of the Month recognition.
A very early Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service performance at the Avalon Ballroom and from what I have been told, the first time the Skull figure appears associated with the Grateful Dead, which we all know became the Grateful Dead's trademark.
What makes this poster so special however is its history; it is a hand colored, thin paper version of FD12 and was picked up the night of the show by two sisters that attended many of the ground zero events at that time including the San Jose Acid Test, The Big Beat Acid Test and the Trips Festival , check out What's New in 2009 - August poster of the month to read the story on The San Jose and Big Beat Acid Test.
The vintage concert poster is simple in its design, but very effective. Done by Wes Wilson who was the premier poster artist at the time doing posters for both Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium and Chet Helm's Avalon Ballroom.
Several of the early Family Dog posters were printed in black and white or one color because of tight finances. Given the creative environment at the time, it is not too surprising that many of these early posters were enhanced by individuals' hand coloring the posters and the coloring on this one is a real winner! A very special poster of the Month.
